Newgate Lodge was consecrated on 16^th September 1950 in the Masonic Hall, Stephenson Road, Heaton, Newcastle Upon Tyne, by the then Provincial Grand Master, R. W. Bro. James Colvin Watson, who was accompanied by numerous Officers of Grand Lodge and Provincial Grand Lodge.

Although originally meeting at the Royal Turks Head Hotel in Grey Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne, the Lodge has had a rather nomadic existence and met in a number of different venues until finally arriving at its present location, Wallsend Masonic Hall, in 2018.

Once the proceedings of the evening commenced, W. Bro. John Bruce then stood in at extremely short notice to deliver the Oration, Service of Thanksgiving and Benediction which was done in an exemplary manner.

The Master, W. Bro. Chris Harrison then read the Warrant of the Lodge. Bro. Les Francis followed this by giving a brief history of the name Newgate. This had been the largest and most important gate in the Medieval Town Wall of Newcastle Upon Tyne and also gave its name to today’s Newgate Street. Sadly, the New Gate was demolished in 1823.

After the Lodge was closed we were all treated to an excellent meal which, judging from the chatter at the Festive Board, was followed by a very enjoyable evening. I’m sure that everyone who attended this very special occasion had a wonderful time.

Congratulations go to Newgate Lodge of MMM No. 1141 for 75 years of continuous working and long may you continue.
